Across America, many white men have become more aggressive. This trend is fueled by divisive rhetoric from figures like Donald Trump. In states like Louisiana, some openly express racist ideas on radio and even TV. This behavior signals a rise in white nationalism. As these ideas gain visibility, they become more dangerous. But in New Orleans Black men are fighting back, refusing to stay silent.
A recent example is the controversy involving WBOK, a Black-owned radio station in New Orleans, and real estate lawyer Justin Schmidt. Schmidt made racially charged comments about WBOK and its owners, accusing them of tolerating criminal activity. His remarks sparked outrage, but the station’s owners did not back down. They fought back with determination and strength.
The WBOK and Justin Schmidt Controversy: A Case of Resilience
The controversy started when Schmidt, without any provocation, attacked WBOK on a conservative talk show. He accused the owners of running the station irresponsibly. Schmidt’s comments used racially loaded language, implying that WBOK was run by people with questionable morals. Schmidt then doubled down with an “apology” that continued the lies and attacks. These remarks were not just inflammatory; they are part of a larger trend of white men feeling empowered to voice racism.
WBOK and its owners responded swiftly. They condemned Schmidt’s statements as offensive and defamatory. Wendell Pierce, a respected actor and businessman, defended the station’s mission to amplify Black voices and community dialogue. Troy Henry, called out the racist nature of Schmidt’s remarks and emphasized that such rhetoric does not belong in public discourse.
The controversy soon became a hot story with TV, radio and the local newspaper all creating stories about the unprovoked attack. And WBOK did not retreat. Instead, they used the controversy to highlight the station’s positive impact on New Orleans and called out the racism in Schmidt’s comments. Their actions show what it means to stand firm against adversity. This is a vital lesson for all who want to fight racism.
Why White Nationalism Is Rising and How to Fight It
Schmidt’s aggression is part of a larger rise in white nationalism. This movement has gained strength in recent years. The January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol showed how dangerous these ideologies can be when they turn violent. As mainstream figures normalize these ideas, the risk of violence increases. It is crucial for communities to fight back. Local media must continue to not only point out the problem. Local media must condemn these divisive and racist acts.

Here’s how we can combat this rise in white nationalism:
1. Support and Defend Black Media: Black-owned media outlets like WBOK provide platforms for marginalized voices. Supporting these outlets helps challenge harmful narratives.
2. Call Out Racism and Bigotry: We must challenge racist remarks and behaviors, whether in person or online. Silence can mean acceptance, so speaking out is essential.
3. Promote Inclusive Policies: Political engagement helps fight white nationalism. Support candidates who promote justice and challenge those who spread prejudice.
4. Foster Dialogue and Education: Open discussions about race, privilege, and equality help dismantle the ignorance that fuels white nationalism. Honest dialogue builds understanding and empathy.
To Do List
The WBOK controversy shows how strong Black men and women can fight back against rising white nationalism. By refusing to be silenced, WBOK’s leaders showed courage and commitment to their mission.
The fight against racism and white nationalism is ongoing. Each challenge is an opportunity to push back against hate. By supporting Black media, speaking out, promoting inclusive policies, and fostering dialogue, we create a society where hate has no place. All people deserve to live free from fear and discrimination.
The four owners of WBOK are Troy Henry, Wendell Pierce, Cleveland Spears and Jeff Thomas
