TL;DR
President Trump is promising a $5,000 “Trump Dividend” if Republicans keep Congress. In 2024, Elon Musk handed out $1 million checks tied to a political petition. Both are reminders that a promise is not a policy. On Nov. 3, Louisiana voters will choose leaders and decide 10 constitutional amendments. Your vote is worth far more than any check.
Key Points
- Trump announced the Trump Dividend in September. No law creates it, and Congress would have to approve it.
- Two lawsuits over Musk’s 2024 giveaway settled this month after his lawyers admitted winners weren’t picked at random.
- Louisiana’s ballot on Nov. 3 includes 10 constitutional amendments.
- Check your registration and your polling place before Election Day.
Every election cycle brings promises. Some are realistic, and some are aspirational. Others are designed to make voters reach for hope before they reach for facts. This year’s biggest example is the Trump Dividend.
At the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas on Sept. 9, President Donald Trump pledged to send every American adult $5,000 if Republicans keep control of the House and Senate. He calls it the “Trump Dividend.”
Whether you support that proposal or oppose it is beside the point. The real question is this: Are you voting because of a promise, or because you understand the stakes?
The Trump Dividend Is a Promise, Not a Policy
A democracy cannot survive if citizens treat elections like lottery drawings. Elections are job interviews for people seeking power over our schools, courts, health care, civil rights, taxes, public safety and economic future.
History teaches that campaign promises are easy to make. Governing is much harder.
No law creates the Trump Dividend, and the president cannot send that money on his own. Congress would have to approve it. The White House has not said how it would pay for the plan, which would likely cost more than $1 trillion at a time when the federal government already runs a deficit of roughly $1.8 trillion a year. One budget expert put it bluntly: dividends normally come out of surpluses, and the country has none to give away.
A Million-Dollar Lesson From 2024
Voters should also remember Elon Musk’s heavily publicized $1 million giveaways during the 2024 election.
The payments went to people who signed a political petition. Musk said winners would be chosen at random. In court, his own lawyers later acknowledged that none of them had been. Voters in Pennsylvania and six other swing states sued, and both lawsuits settled on Oct. 15. The terms were not made public.
Again, the point is not whether you agree or disagree with Musk’s politics. The point is that democracy is worth more than a check.
What Your Vote Actually Decides
Your vote determines who writes the laws on affordable housing, Medicare, Social Security, reproductive rights, voting rights, the environment, public education, workers’ rights and criminal justice. Those decisions can shape generations.
A one-time payment, even one as large as the Trump Dividend, can be spent in a few months. A Supreme Court appointment lasts decades. A single congressional vote can decide health care access for millions of people, and a judicial election can affect your constitutional rights long after the campaign signs come down.
Louisiana voters also face 10 proposed constitutional amendments on Nov. 3. Each one can help or harm you, and the ballot language is not always plain English. Read a trusted, nonpartisan guide before you go, so you can vote in your own best interest. [AMENDMENT GUIDE LINK — JEFF TO SUPPLY]
Get Ready for Nov. 3
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Before you go:
- Confirm your registration is active. Don’t assume it is just because you voted before.
- Look up your polling place.
- Review a sample ballot.
- Learn the candidates and read up on the amendments.
You can do all of it through the Louisiana Secretary of State’s elections site.
Your Vote Is Worth Your Voice
Most importantly, do not let anyone convince you that your vote is worth only what someone is willing to promise you. Not the Trump Dividend, not a million-dollar drawing, not any campaign’s sales pitch.
Your vote is worth your voice, your community, your future and your freedom.
For many Americans, especially those whose ancestors fought, marched, bled and died for the right to cast a ballot, the vote is far too valuable to trade for a political promise.
Vote like your life depends on it. The future of your family, your neighborhood and your democracy just might.
